Digital Story Telling
Essay Reflection
I finally realized that I must do my schoolwork to keep from being ignorant, to get on in life, to become a journalist, because that’s what I want! I know I can write ..., but it remains to be seen whether I really have talent ... And if I don’t have the talent to write books or newspaper articles, I can always write for myself. But I want to achieve more than that. I can’t imagine living like Mother, Mrs. van Daan and all the women who go about their work and are then forgotten. I need to have something besides a husband and children to devote myself to! ... I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death! And that’s why I’m so grateful to God for having given me this gift, which I can use to develop myself and to express all that’s inside me! When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that’s a big question, will I ever be able to write something great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer?
Anne Frank's wish to tell her story has far surpassed what she probably initially imagined, but she was unable to see her dream accomplished. Imagine if Anne would have had the technology of a computer with the capabilities of blogging, facebook, etc. How would her situation change?
Thought to consider: Do you think the United States would have entered the war sooner if they had access to stories like Anne's?
Digital Story Telling/ The Battle and The Hiding Place
"I kept making list after list of the things that made me feel joy. And I kept drawing cartoons of the things that made me angry. I keep writing and rewriting, drawing, and redrawing, and rethinking and revising and reediting. It became my grieving ceremony."
Anne Frank's battles took place in the middle of an actual war; her place of safety was a physical hiding place. Arnold on the other hand faces many different types of battles: racism, poverty, hopelessness. He found refuge through drawing and writing.
Create a digital story that reveals a battle you have faced in your life and the people, places, hobbies, etc. that make you feel safe. Remember the elements of digital storytelling: words, voice, music, images, and other forms of media. Your story should be between 2-5 minutes.

Euphemisms
On Wednesday, July 8, 1942 Anne reports that Margot received a call-up for "resettlement" for labor in the east. In her response Anne shows that she understands the true meaning of resettlement, "It was a great shock to me, a call-up; everyone knows what that means. I picture concentration camps and lonely cells- should we allow him to be doomed to this?" List one example of a euphemism in the language used against Jews and one from settlers used against Native Americans. Genocide
"No,no it's just a saying. I didn't literally kill Indians. We were
supposed to make you give up being Indian. your songs and stories and language and dancing. Everything. We weren't trying to kill Indian people. We were trying to kill Indian culture."
By Friday post a picture that tells a story about the genocide of Indian culture and explain it.
Battling Stereotypes
RESPOND TO QUESTIONS FOR ONE OF THE TWO IMAGES
The image to the left was published in Look magazine June 20 1961. What stereotypes are evoked from both the image and the language used in this advertisement?
The image to the right is an actual prewar poster
that would be found on German streets. This
poster is entitled Der Ewige Jude (The Eternal Jew). Define scapegoating and then make an application to this image. Based on your knowledge of the economic issues in Germany, how is the Nazi party using stereotyping in this image against Jewish people?
